A new piling technique that could be transformational for the construction sector has been created by piling specialist Cementation Skanska, working for Skanska Costain Strabag joint venture (SCS JV) in London. The New Zero Trim Pile Technique, utilising a vacuum excavator supplied by Hercules Site Services, has been successfully tested on HS2.
Whilst vacuum excavation technology is not new, using it in this way in the construction sector marks a step change, and initial trials have proved overwhelmingly successful. HS2 contractors saw a promising opportunity and Hercules were more than will to invest in machinery to help develop the innovative new method to deliver the project. Hercules Site Services, were keen to develop the technology, and provided one of our fleet of suction excavators for use on site in the Euston Approaches, for use on real life piles.
The new technique has a number of great benefits:
- A reduction in the health risks that results from breaking piles
- Noise reduction
- Significant time savings
- Reducing carbon emissions
