The project on behalf of FloGas is part of a £40million investment in the existing Avonmouth site to create the nation’s largest liquified petroleum gas (LPG) storage terminal.

In November 2020, Hercules Site Services were appointed by TGE (Principal Contractor) for initial site investigation and site preparation works including service diversions and the installation of piling mats. Following on from the early success and collaboration in the preliminary works, Hercules were awarded works valued at £620,000 for the construction of the Earth Covered Tank base slab and retaining wall. Works involved the casting of 620m^3 concrete base slab in a single pour and the construction of the 4.2m tall by 35m long retaining wall and access tunnel structure (as seen in photos below).

Hercules had early involvement in this project, helping with the initial site investigation and site preparatory works. The main scheme is a bottled gas storage plant, incorporating a number of large process slabs and associated drainage, hardstandings, and roads.

The photo to the side shows the day of the pour of the main Earth Covered Tank slab – a 620m3 concrete pour, and the photo below demonstrates the subsequent preparation for the main retaining wall.

Delays to the design during Covid meant there was pressure to commence on site as soon as an area was detailed. Hercules’ pro-active and flexible approach has helped with this, as we accommodate new works areas, and increased resources as and when necessary.

The works are currently ongoing, with labour levels reaching a peak of 30 no.
